As we continue to integrate Lion Nathan with National Foods, we are developing group-wide targets.
The following targets are currently in place:

WATER USAGE

10% Reduction based on 2009 usage by 2015.

TOTAL ENERGY
(GAS, COAL, ELECTRICITY) USAGE

30% Reduction based on 2007 energy usage by 2020.
PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP

AUSTRALIAN PACKAGING COVENANT

The Covenant’s objective is to minimise packaging’s environmental impacts by pursuing these performance goals:

  1. Design: optimise packaging to use resources efficiently and reduce environmental impact without compromising product quality and safety.
  2. Recycling: efficiently collect and recycle packaging.
  3. Product stewardship: demonstrate commitment by all signatories.

The Covenant is based on a waste hierarchy: first, avoid and minimise packaging waste, then reuse, recycle, recover and finally, dispose.

PACKAGING PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP (NEW ZEALAND)

The Accord has been replaced by Accredited Voluntary Product Stewardship programs. Lion Nathan is leading the industry groups to achieve these voluntary outcomes:

Glass Packaging Forum of NZ: has received accreditation to its voluntary scheme. Our efforts have been well received and our representative has been appointed to the waste advisory board.

Packaging Council of NZ: we have led the development and design of PacNZ’s scheme that is currently gathering data and membership in preparation for accreditation in 2012.

LOST TIME INJURY FREQUENCY RATE Year-on-year improvement with a goal of 0 LTIFR by 2015.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 100% of Lion Nathan National Foods sites are working towards ISO 14001 accreditation. LN sites will be 100% accredited by 2013, with NF sites progressing to accreditation of ISO 14001 standard.
