Scope of report

The information in this report covers all Lion Nathan National Foods’ operations in Australia and New Zealand for the financial year from 1 October 2009 to 30 September 2010, unless otherwise stated.

These operations comprise eight breweries, one craft brewery, one distillery, one contract bottling company/distillery, seven wineries, 44 liquor outlets, production facilities, sales offices and corporate head offices in Australia and New Zealand. In National Foods we have a number of manufacturing facilities to process our variety of products. These include five dairy foods plants, one of which is in New Zealand, twelve milk processing plants, five juice processing plants and eight cheese manufacturing sites, all based in Australia. The report does not cover the operations of our parent company Kirin Holdings.

This is the first report to combine the operations of Lion Nathan and National Foods. Historically, National Foods has not produced a detailed sustainability report, which means there may be some areas with limited information for this first year. Where information and material is available to Lion Nathan National Foods’ markets outside Australia – particularly the United States and the United Kingdom for Lion Nathan and Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia for National Foods – it is included and clearly referenced. Where the information referenced does not reflect our Australia and New Zealand businesses, this is also clearly indicated.

Lion Nathan National Foods has 10 material joint ventures: Heineken Lion, Bacardi Lion, BevChain and Vitasoy, Capital Chilled Foods Australia (CCFA), Blowflex & Pippak, Indosari, Bar-Berri and QBB. Where we manufacture on behalf of a joint venture, details are included in the report. Data relating to our people covers Heineken Lion, Bacardi Lion, Vitasoy and CCFA, but not BevChain. Our brand partners Heineken and Bacardi have their own sustainability and marketing programs, which are covered in their own global sustainability reporting. Our carbon footprint data includes our joint ventures.

In preparing the report we have used the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines as a framework.
