Our progress

Major focus areas for our environmental efforts are reducing the environmental impact of our facilities, enhancing our environmental practices across the company, and working closely with our suppliers across Australia to help develop and drive best practice procurement management.

The following targets were achieved during FY10:

AIMS ACHIEVEMENTS
Continue to embed Environmental sustainability in our corporate culture through our Sustainability Ambassador Program and Sustainability Leadership Group (SLG) New SLG established for combined entity and three year strategy developed. Due to the focus on integration, the Sustainability Ambassador program was not driven as strongly throughout FY10. However many site teams continued to look for opportunities to reduce paper and electricity. red tick
Deliver on our climate change initiatives and develop further emissions reduction activities through our involvement in internal and external programs and in partnership with our suppliers We upgraded our carbon calculator software and determined the carbon footprint across the group. National Foods was included for the first time. Using the outcomes from this exercise we are now in the process of building a carbon reduction strategy for LNNF. red tick
Continue water efficiency management programs and determine the full lifecycle water footprint for Lion Nathan to further understand and reduce our water consumption in partnership with stakeholders

Water programs with local and state authorities continued in addition to our internal water reduction action plans. We completed an inaugural water footprint for the entire group and from this, we are developing a water reduction strategy.

National Foods reduced water usage by over 7% and Lion Nathan reduced water consumption per litre of product by 4% on last year.

Deliver on our energy efficiency programs and action plans to reduce our consumption and associated emissions

We again participated in the Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) Program, National Pollutant Inventory Program and in the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS).

National Foods reduced emissions by 8%, completed its annual EEO requirements and reduced its energy usage by over 3.5%

Lion Nathan Australia reduced carbon emissions by 10%. Unfortunately in New Zealand consumption was not comparable due to the Pride/Khyber Pass Road changeover where we ran both sites in parallel during the start-up phases. However, when we are running solely on the new Pride site, we expect our reductions to be on track.

Maintain a leadership role in product stewardship, including development and implementation of new National Packaging Covenant (Australia) action plans and New Zealand Packaging Council initiatives

We achieved our commitments under the Covenant action plan and the Packaging Stewardship Forum and continued to improve our packaging sustainability and impacts in the market place.

We maintain our leadership role by holding the positions of President of the Packaging Council of New Zealand, Chair of the New Zealand Glass Forum and we sit on the board of the Australian Packaging Council and Australian Food and Grocery Council Packaging Stewardship Forum. Separately, through ministerial invitation, we represent industry on the New Zealand Environment Minister’s Waste Advisory Board.

Continue our environmental ’goodworks’ projects to enhance habitat rehabilitation and biodiversity preservation

Wither Hills has continued with the management and improvement of the Rarangi Wetlands and included a planting day with staff involvement.

Petaluma continues to control the weeds in the recovering replanted area alongside the John Dunn Section of the Cox’s Creek. Knappstein similarly continues to control the weeds on the Hutt River Rehabilitation Project.

National Foods partnered with Landcare to support our dairy farmer suppliers to implement sustainable farming practices and to support Landcare community groups to implement environmental projects.
