Glossary
ABV
Alcohol by volume is a standard measure (used worldwide) of how much alcohol is contained in an alcoholic beverage. It is expressed as a percentage of total volume.
Advertising Standards Authority (New Zealand)
The prime function of the authority is to self-regulate advertising in New Zealand.
Advertising Standards Board (Australia)
The board considers written complaints about advertisements in the mainstream media which people find offensive. It is funded by the industry through the Australian Advertising Standards Council.
Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand
The council’s primary objective is to promote moderation in the use of alcohol and to develop and promote strategies that will reduce alcohol related problems.
Association of New Zealand Advertisers
A body that represents more than 100 major New Zealand’s advertisers, providing them with a collective voice in dealings with government, advertising agencies and the media.
Australasian Associated Brewers
An industry association that represents Australia’s and New Zealand’s largest manufacturing brewers.
Australian Association of National Advertisers
A body that represents the rights and responsibilities of companies and individuals involved in Australia’s $30 billion a year advertising, marketing and media industry.
Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC)
A national body representing the nation's food and grocery products manufacturers.

Be Drink Aware (Australia)
An industry led initiative which aims to help people be more aware of the way in which they consume alcohol and the effects alcohol has on their bodies.

A by-product is a secondary or incidental product deriving from a manufacturing process.
Cogeneration
Simultaneous generation of electricity and useful heat.

Carbon dioxide.
CO2e
Carbon dioxide equivalent, which describes how much global warming a given type and amount of greenhouse gas may cause, using the functionally equivalent amount or concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) as the reference.
Drink Responsibly (New Zealand)
An industry led initiative in New Zealand which aims to help people be more aware of the way in which they consume alcohol and the effects alcohol has on their bodies.
DrinkWise Australia
A not-for-profit, independent research and social change agency funded by the Australian alcohol industry dedicated to building a safer drinking culture through research, community-based programs and social marketing campaigns.
EBIT
Earnings before interest and tax – total earnings before provisions are deducted. This measures a company’s performance and is often used in preference to net profit as it excludes the effects of borrowings and tax benefits and adjustments.
Earth Hour
A global climate change initiative asking individuals, businesses, governments and communities to turn out their lights for one hour.

Lion Nathan’s experiential learning program for new leaders.
Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program
Established by the federal government, this program encourages large energy users to improve their energy efficiency by identifying, evaluating and publicly reporting on energy savings opportunities.

GRI
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a network-based organisation that has pioneered the development of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework. The framework sets out the principles and indicators that organisations can use to measure and report their economic, environmental, and social performance.
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
A production control system for the food industry that identifies where potential contamination can occur (the critical control points) and strictly manages and monitors these points as a way of ensuring that the safest product possible is being produced.
ISO 14001
An internationally accepted standard that sets out how companies can go about putting in place an effective environmental management system.
Lion Pride
Lion Nathan’s workplace giving program where individuals donate pre-tax money to partner charities that is then matched dollar for dollar by Lion Nathan.
Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate
The number of lost time injuries x 1,000,000 hours divided by the hours worked.

National Alcohol Beverage Industries Council (NABIC)
A body representing the manufacturers and sellers of alcohol.
National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme
A national framework for reporting and disseminating information about corporations’ greenhouse gas emissions, greenhouse gas projects, energy use and production.
National Packaging Covenant (Australia)
A collaborative agreement between government and Industry designed to minimise the environmental impacts of packaging disposal, conserve resources through better design and production processes and facilitate the re-use and recycling of used packaging materials.
National Pollutant Inventory (NPI)
This federal government initiative provides the community, industry and government with free information about substance emissions in Australia. It has emission estimates for 93 toxic substances and the source and location of these emissions.
New Zealand Distilled Spirits Association
An organisation that represents the views of New Zealand's leading producers and marketers of premium spirits and liqueurs.
New Zealand Food and Grocery Council
A body that represents the manufacturers and suppliers behind New Zealand's major food, beverage and grocery brands.
New Zealand Glass Packaging Forum
A non-profit organisation which aims to ensure the ongoing performance of glass as environmentally acceptable packaging.

Packaging Stewardship Forum
The Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of AFGC was established in 2006. The PSF works with partners across Australia to deliver voluntary industry recycling, litter reduction and education programs on behalf of its members, Australia’s largest beverage companies and their packaging suppliers.

Volatile Organic Compound.
WET
The wine equalisation tax is applied to wine consumed in Australia. It applies to grape wine, grape wine products, fruit or vegetable wine, cider, perry, mead and sake products – all of which have an alcohol content of over 1.15%. The tax is generally paid by wine producers, wholesalers or importers, rather than retailers.
